Calmpaw Lick Mat — Calming Slow-Feeder
15 minutes of calm for your anxious, bored, or overstimulated dog — a simple silicone mat that does what other toys can’t.
Why your dog can’t seem to settle
It’s 4pm. You have a Zoom call at 4:30. Your dog is pacing, asking for attention, chewing the rug. You’ve tried the Kong, the snuffle ball, a long morning walk. None of it buys you a focused work block when you actually need one.
Most dog toys are designed for excitement, not calming. Tennis balls, squeaky toys, even puzzle feeders all keep your dog alert — that’s the opposite of what an anxious or overstimulated dog needs.
What lick mats actually do
Repetitive licking is one of the natural self-soothing behaviors dogs use — similar in feel to how some humans chew gum or take a long, slow breath. When a dog focuses on slowly working a spread of peanut butter or yogurt off a textured silicone surface, their body language usually shifts within minutes: shoulders drop, breathing slows, and most dogs lay down on their own.
It’s not a cure for anxiety. It’s not a treatment for any clinical condition. It’s a simple, quiet physical activity that happens to be one of the most calming things a dog can do — and unlike fetch or puzzles, your dog can do it on their own while you do whatever you need to do.
What you get
How to use it
- Spread 1-2 tablespoons of something tasty. Peanut butter (xylitol-free!), plain Greek yogurt, mashed banana, plain pumpkin puree, wet dog food, frozen broth, or kibble mixed with water.
- Press the suction cups onto a clean flat surface. Tile, hardwood, ceramic, or the wall of the bathtub. Wipe with a damp cloth first so the suction grips.
- Let your dog work on it. Most dogs settle within 30-60 seconds and stay focused for 10-20 minutes.
Once a day during the times your dog usually struggles to settle — late afternoon, right after you get home, or before you leave the house.
Cleaning & care
- Dishwasher safe (top rack) for daily use
- Or rinse with warm water + soft brush
- Air dry or pat with a clean towel
- Avoid bleach, harsh detergents, or scouring pads (damages silicone)
- Inspect monthly for tears — replace if you spot any
- With 3-5 sessions per week, the silicone holds up for ~6-12 months
Who this is for
- Anxious dogs who struggle to settle when you leave the house
- Bored dogs whose energy needs a quiet outlet
- Fast eaters (especially deep-chested breeds prone to bloat)
- Crate-training puppies or rescues
- Senior dogs who need gentle mental engagement without strenuous play
- Dogs going through bath time, nail trims, or vet visits
Who this is not for
- Heavy chewers. This is a licking surface, not a chew toy. If your dog has destroyed a Kong or eats silicone in chunks, choose a hard-rubber alternative instead.
- Dogs who eat non-food objects on contact. Always supervise the first 2-3 uses to confirm your dog’s behavior is compatible.
- Dogs with severe food allergies. Check what you spread on it carefully.
Safety
- Food-grade, BPA-free silicone per manufacturer spec
- Designed for licking — not chewing. Supervise the first 2-3 sessions.
- Keep suction cups attached during use — if they detach, your dog may try to pick the mat up
- For dogs 25 lb+, the 20cm size is recommended (more surface area)
Frequently asked questions
Will my dog actually use it?
Most dogs latch on within the first 2-3 sessions. Start with peanut butter (xylitol-free) or plain Greek yogurt — strong scent and flavor get nearly any food-motivated dog to engage. If your dog ignores food puzzles entirely, freezing the spread first usually does it.
Is it safe?
Food-grade, BPA-free silicone per the manufacturer spec sheet. Suction cups hold it in place. We recommend supervising the first 2-3 sessions to confirm your dog’s behavior with it is compatible.
What can I spread on it?
Peanut butter (xylitol-free, important), plain Greek yogurt, mashed banana, plain pumpkin puree, wet dog food, frozen broth, or kibble with a little water. Avoid chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, xylitol, and heavily seasoned human food.
What size should I pick?
15.5cm (Gray only) for small breeds under 25 lb. 20cm (Green, Purple, or Blue) for medium-large breeds 25 lb+. If you’re between sizes, go 20cm — the larger surface keeps your dog engaged longer.
Can I freeze it?
Yes — silicone is freezer-safe. Frozen yogurt or broth extends sessions from ~15 to ~25-30 minutes. Great for bath time, grooming, or longer work calls.
Will it work for puppies?
Yes — gentle and safe for puppies 8+ weeks old. Start with shorter 5-minute sessions to build the habit, then extend as they get used to it.
Can I use it for bath time or grooming?
One of the most popular uses. Stick the mat to the wall of the bathtub with the suction cups, spread peanut butter, and most dogs are calm for the entire wash. Same trick works for nail trimming and vet visits.
How long does it last?
With 3-5 sessions per week, the silicone holds up for ~6-12 months. Inspect monthly and replace if you notice tears.
